About the Artist

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Virginia Headley Maserang is a contemporary painter based in Georgetown, Texas. Her primary medium is encaustic – a combination of beeswax, damar tree resin, and pigment – but she often includes a variety of other media and collage to create layered surfaces rich with luminous color, texture, and emotive marks. Within the context of this lush visual language, her works explore themes of self-reflection, nostalgia, and divine connection, often through an intuitive conversation between abstracted and representational elements. Her body of work includes 2-dimensional pieces on panel or paper, as well as 3-dimensional assemblage.

Her formal education led her to a B.A. and Ph.D. in microbiology, and she cultivated a successful career in public health. Seeking to balance all the science in her life, she began painting in 2009 after spending an afternoon in the studio of Sharon Kyle and falling in love with beeswax and encaustic painting.  She continued her studies in encaustic techniques with Gina Adams, Michelle Belto, and Cynthia Winika. She was selected in 2021 to participate in the inaugural class of the artist residency, The Enso Circle. Since 2011, she has exhibited her work in solo, juried, and group exhibitions primarily in central Texas. Her solo exhibit, “Moody Blues”, was featured in 2022 at the Georgetown City Hall Gallery. In 2022-2026, her work has been included in the invitational Birdsong exhibitions at the McCrory-Timmerman Galleries in Taylor, Texas, winning a People’s Choice Award with “Post-Modern Matisse” in 2022. In 2024, she and Samantha Melvin created the exhibit “Entangled,” an exploration of the connection of humans and their environment, for the Georgetown Art Center.

Headley Maserang retired from her career in public health, and she currently paints and teaches encaustic technique in Georgetown, Texas where she lives with her husband and two miniature schnauzers.
